Fuse board replacement
Consumer Unit Upgrades
If you still have a fuse board with rewireable fuses, a plastic enclosure or a single RCD that takes out the whole house when it trips, an upgrade is the single biggest safety improvement you can make. A modern board gives every circuit its own RCBO, so a fault on one circuit no longer plunges the rest into darkness.
We test the existing installation first. There is no point fitting a new board onto wiring that will fail its own tests, so we are honest about whether an upgrade alone is enough or whether other work is due.
What you get
- Modern metal consumer unit with individual RCBO protection per circuit
- Surge protection device (SPD) to protect electronics from spikes
- Main bonding to gas and water checked and brought up to standard
- Every circuit tested before and after the change
- Electrical Installation Certificate and Part P notification
- Old board removed and taken away
Consumer units are installed to BS 7671:2018 + Amendment 4:2026 in non-combustible enclosures with RCBO and surge protection, and notified under Part P through our NICEIC registration.
Step by step
- 01 Pre-check
We test the existing circuits so the new board is not hiding old problems.
- 02 Bonding check
Main protective bonding to gas and water is checked and corrected if needed.
- 03 Change over
The board is swapped, usually within a day, with power off for the shortest time possible.
- 04 Test & certify
Full testing and your certificate, plus Building Regs notification.
Recent consumer unit upgrades jobs
Old fuse board in our ex-council semi was ancient. New board with the individual breakers means one dodgy plug no longer knocks out the whole house. Fair price, in and out in a day.
Good to know
Do I really need RCBOs on every circuit?
It is the modern standard and it is worth it: a fault on one circuit no longer trips the whole house, so your freezer and lights stay on while you sort the problem.
Why test before changing the board?
A new board on tired wiring can trip straight away because it is doing its job. Testing first tells us the truth and avoids a wasted visit.
How long is the power off?
Typically two to four hours in total across the day, and we plan it around you where we can.
